A Whiter Smile Next Year

Everyone likes to make a make a great impression with a nice bright smile.  Riverwalk Dental provides an at-home whitening system to patients that you can use to whiten and brighten your smile gradually at home.  Patients with serious and minor stains can both see great results from this whitening treatment.  A consultation can help you determine how severe your stains are and what kind of results you can expect from a whitening treatment.  Come visit us about teeth whitening and start the New Year with your best smile!

To whiten your teeth at home, we outfit patients with whitening gel and a set of custom trays for application.  A dentist takes an impression of your teeth, and from this impression two custom trays are made for your top and bottom teeth.  The trays are made for you to take home and use by applying gel to the trays and then fitting them over your teeth. The dentist’s recommendation of how often to treat and how long each treatment should last may vary.  When following the dentist’s recommendations, most patients see results of teeth whitening 4-8 shades.

Have You Had A Cleaning This Year?

At Riverwalk Dental we encourage all our patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.  During the holidays, we want everyone looking forward to the New Year and maintaining great oral hygiene!  However much you brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly not just to clean your teeth, but also to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.  During a teeth cleaning, a hygienist thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the hygienist flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist. Come see us for a cleaning to make a great impression during the holidays, and start the year off with your best smile!

Adult Orthodontics

Riverwalk Dental provides orthodontic care for adolescents and adults.  It is often recommended to start treatment on an adolescent patient once all the permanent teeth have come in, but adults can still get great results from orthodontic care.  There are several options for adults beginning orthodontic treatment, and the best one for you will depend on what needs to be corrected.

To correct bite issues and straighten teeth, the traditional braces method includes brackets on the teeth and connecting wires that are tightened over the course of treatment. Clear braces use the same method but the materials are tooth-colored to avoid a metallic look.  Accelerated orthodontics are applied to correct cosmetic issues in about six months. Severe misalignments and bite issues can’t be corrected in such a short time, but if your concerns are purely cosmetic, it’s a great option for a short treatment time that can completely transform your smile. Invisalign treatment is popular because of its almost invisible appearance.  A treatment plan consists of a series of clear aligners that straighten teeth over time.  Come see us and find out what will be best to correct your smile!

Restoring Smiles with Dental Implants

Riverwalk Dental replaces teeth and restores patient smiles with dental implants. Implants are a permanent restorative option for teeth that are missing or have been extracted.  They look and feel like natural teeth, and are the most permanent and efficient means of replacing lost teeth.  Implants are titanium screws inserted into the jaw bone. Over a period of 3-6 months, the jaw bone heals around the implant to become a solid, stable base for the new tooth. During this time a patient is fitted with a temporary crown, and a custom crown is created to match their smile perfectly.

After the jaw bone and gums have healed appropriately, the custom crown is placed in a second appointment. Sometimes, the doctor may need to expose the head of the implant in a second minor surgery.  When everything is healed, the crown will be screwed or cemented to the top of the implant.  When this is complete the tooth looks like part of the natural smile, and with proper care will last for decades!

Drinking Water for Oral Health

Drinking water is important for your health at all ages.  At Riverwalk Dental, we see that plenty of adult patients that are guilty of not drinking enough water, so we know it can be tough to monitor if kids are getting enough too.  We want to encourage you and the kids in your family to stay hydrated and healthy!

We all know kids love drinking juice and soda, but we forget that these beverages leave unwanted sugar behind on the teeth.  The type of bacteria that causes cavities feeds on sugar, and produces acid that wears away enamel. Enamel is not replaceable, so it’s important to take care of it even from a young age.  When kids drink juice or soda, it is helpful just to drink some water afterwards to dilute acids and wash away food particles and residue. You and your children should be drinking at least eight 8oz glasses of water each day.  Drinking tap water with fluoride is important to help prevent cavities.  If you’re worried that your children may not be drinking enough water, come see us to discuss tips that might help them drink more!

We love to see good oral hygiene habits formed early, and make lifetime patients out of kids from our community!  To learn more about the services we offer, visit www.riverwalkdental.ca for more information. Prevent Embarrassing Bad Breath

Bad breath that results from consuming potent foods like onions or garlic isn’t harmful to our health. However, when it becomes persistent due to lack of oral hygiene, then our doctors of Riverwalk Dental have a bone to pick with patients. Medically deemed, halitosis, bad breath can be an acute or chronic condition. There are many risk factors, such as tobacco products, dry mouth, or poor oral health.

If you don’t brush and floss your teeth daily, food particles can remain in your mouth, promoting bacterial growth between teeth, around the gums, and on the tongue. This causes bad breath. Bad breath odors vary, depending on the source or the underlying cause. Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum disease. If you have bad breath, review your oral hygiene habits. If your bad breath persists after making changes, visit us as soon as possible.

If you have questions or concerns about oral health or bad breath prevention, please give us a call. Composite (White) Fillings

Bonding can be used to correct cracks or gaps in teeth and is a popular method to enhance the aesthetics of your smile. It is also used as a filling after a cavity has been removed, or to cover up stains or discolored teeth. Ultimately, the best dental filling is no dental filling, but here at Riverwalk Dental, we focus on providing you with a bright smile that blends with the natural color of your teeth.

Aesthetics are the main advantage of white fillings since dentists can blend shades to create a color nearly identical to that of the actual tooth. This mixture of tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture bond to the tooth to support the remaining tooth structure, which helps to prevent breakage and insulate the tooth from excessive temperature changes. In addition, these tooth-colored fillings provide good durability and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid-size fillings that need to withstand moderate pressure from the constant stress of chewing.

Pediatric Dentistry

The doctors and staff of Riverwalk Dental take pride in serving the families from our community, and we want you to know it’s just as important for children to have regular dental visits.  A child’s first dental visit should be scheduled when the first baby tooth appears, or around the child’s first birthday.  Baby teeth eventually come out, but their growth and development is important for overall oral health for the child and the development of their adult teeth.

Baby teeth should be brushed and cared for like adult teeth, and it’s important to monitor their growth and development.  Missing any tooth for too long can change the development of surrounding teeth and compromise the structure of the jaw bone, but regular checkups can keep a child’s tooth development right on track.  Our dentists are skilled and experienced in administering dental care to children.  If your child has seems nervous about seeing a dentist for the first time, we recommend going through a brushing routine with them at home, and talking about the dental visit before you arrive.  Once we get your child’s oral health off to a great start, we offer a full range of services for child patients including dental cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants.

Smoking With Sleep Apnea

Smoking will exacerbate any respiratory condition and it is proven to cause snoring and lead to obstructive sleep apnea.  Patients struggling with sleep apnea should see the doctors at Riverwalk Dental for evaluation. We can help patients find relief from sleep apnea, but quitting smoking is up to you!  Smoking causes upper airway inflammation, meaning the swelling causes the airway to narrow and disrupts the nasal passage and throat.  This causes snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.  Cigarettes are highly addictive, and some smokers seek treatment for sleep apnea but continue to smoke. Smoking with sleep apnea not only puts more stress on the heart every day, but negates any treatment a sleep apnea patient is undergoing.

Habitual smokers may feel relaxed by one last cigarette for the day, but it actually creates more complications for restful sleep. Smokers can experience nicotine withdrawal overnight, causing more waking up and restlessness.  Quitting smoking cold turkey is very difficult, but even lessening the amount of cigarettes or avoiding smoking at nighttime can help you achieve more restful sleep.  Most smokers cannot quit on their own or on their first attempt, so don’t get discouraged!

If you have questions or concerns regarding sleep disorders, please give us a call. To learn more about sleep apnea and the treatments we offer, visit www.riverwalkdental.ca for more information. Fluoride Treatment

At Riverwalk Dental, our doctors provide patients with fluoride treatments to help protect their tooth enamel. Fluoride is commonly called nature’s cavity fighter and there’s a good reason for this. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the entire tooth surface more resistant to acid attacks from the bacteria that live in the plaque on your teeth. Fluoride also promotes remineralization, which aids in repairing early decay before a cavity forms in the tooth.

Fluoride is found naturally in soil, water, foods, and several minerals. When present at the right level, fluoride in drinking water has two beneficial effects preventing tooth decay and contributing to healthy bones. The type of fluoride we utilize at our practice is called topical fluoride. Topical fluoride is applied directly to and absorbed by the surface of the teeth. It may be applied as a foam or gel after a professional cleaning and can additionally be found in personal oral hygiene products such as toothpaste and mouth rinses.

Cracked Tooth Syndrome

Cracked tooth syndrome does not mean that you are clumsy enough to crack your teeth all the time. Believe it or not, cracked tooth syndrome occurs when a tooth has a crack that is too small to show up on X-rays or is under the gum and challenging to identify. The sensitivity may be mild to intense, which is why to determine if you have a cracked tooth, one of our doctors at Riverwalk Dental, will examine your mouth and teeth with and without X-rays, focusing on the tooth in question.

Cracked tooth syndrome more often occurs in molars, usually lower molars, which absorb most of the forces of chewing. People who grind or clench their teeth may be more susceptible to cracked tooth syndrome because of the constant forces put on the teeth. Many people with cracked tooth syndrome have symptoms for months, but it’s often difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are not consistent.

Cirrhosis and Gum Disease

We hope patients at Riverwalk Dental see the dentists’ office as a hopeful place. There are a growing number of studies that show dental health is vital to overall health, and that regular cleanings can lead to unexpected improvements in other areas. Recently, researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University found evidence of a causative effect between treating gum disease and cirrhosis symptoms.

Cirrhosis, which results from scarring of the liver, is seriously detrimental to the body. It results in increased inflammation and decreased cognitive function. Both cirrhosis and periodontal disease can result from abuse of alcohol and tobacco, so it’s unsurprising that people with one would be at increased risk for the other. But periodontal disease is also unusually common in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which prompted researchers to experiment.

They found that when people with cirrhosis were treated for gum disease, the number of bacteria in their gut that combat inflammation increased, as did their cognitive function. No significant change was found in the control group. Researchers are unsure what the connection is, but it demonstrates why it’s wrong for people to think that regular dental cleanings aren’t important.

Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

Tooth extractions are a commonly done service at Riverwalk Dental. While we would always rather save a tooth than remove it, there are times when extractions are necessary to prevent overcrowding or the spread of decay. The procedure almost always succeeds without any complications, but patients should be aware that we need their full cooperation to prevent problems such as osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).

Tooth extractions are usually a simple affair in which the tooth is rocked to loosen it up until it can be pulled the rest of the way. The jaw bone will be briefly exposed at the base of the empty socket, but a blood clot will seal it off. ONJ describes when the bone tissue begins to die. It can happen if the patient is taking bisphosphonate medications, which are used to prevent bone resorption. People with osteopenia may take them orally, but the majority of ONJ cases occurred in people taking them intravenously for chemotherapy.

ONJ is treatable. The decayed material would be shaved and the bone would be rinsed with antibiotics. But it can be avoided if patients inform dentists of all the medications they are on. If a patient is taking bisphosphonates, we may be able to come up with an alternative solution for their dental issue.

How Cavities Damage Teeth

The sugary food and beverages we consume on a daily basis might taste delicious, but they are slowly wreaking havoc on tooth enamel. Foods that cling to the teeth, such as bread, cakes, and hard candy, produce acids that weaken enamel and cause cavities. Cavities don’t go away by themselves and will need to be filled by one of our doctors at Riverwalk Dental. We’d much rather you practice prevention instead of reaching that point.

Fillings help cavities from growing larger, but the best thing you can do for your teeth is to avoid them altogether. To prevent cavities, avoid frequent snacking and specific food and drinks, such as honey, raisins, and dry cereal. If your oral hygiene routine doesn’t include brushing at least twice a day for two minutes or flossing at least once a day, you’ll need to improve to prevent holes from developing in the teeth.

Water Flossing

What is water flossing? Water flossing is another way to clean teeth, and this method involves using a hand-held device. Water flossing can be ideal for people who have trouble flossing by hand and our doctors at Riverwalk Dental want patients to know that if they are going to invest in a water flosser it should have the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

Water flossers have been tested to be safe and effective for removing plaque, and are helpful if you’ve had dental work performed on the teeth, such as bridges, dentures, or braces. Depending on which flossing technique you decide to use, keep in mind that cleaning between your teeth should never be painful. Talk to our doctors and discuss which dental cleaner is best for you and remember that whichever floss you decide to use is better than not flossing at all.

Back to School Cleanings

If it’s been more than six months since your child’s last teeth cleaning, now’s a great time to visit Riverwalk Dental in Calgary. We’re open late, allowing kids to come in without missing school, and if they have a dental problem, it’s best to get it taken care of early in the year.

Children are the age group that gets dental infections the most frequently. Usually, the issue is bad hygiene. We can educate children about better brushing and flossing techniques and direct parents toward toothbrush grips if their child had a motor control issue. Even if the decay is in a baby tooth, parents should take it seriously. When children have toothaches, they may have difficulty eating and sleeping, leading to worse behavior in school and slower learning.

The dental examination is an opportunity to plan for long-term dental care as well as to do a cleaning. It may be where other conditions come to light, such as if pain in the upper teeth is being caused by a nasal or sinus blockage. We can also reshape a mouthguard for school sports and provide a night guard if we observe signs of nighttime teeth grinding.

Dr. Jared Palmer and his team operate Riverwalk Dental at 540 6th Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2G 1K5, Canada. To schedule an appointment, call 1-403-456-4994 or visit Riverwalk Dental.

Sjögren’s Syndrome

Patients at Riverwalk Dental in Calgary are accustomed to nonjudgmental, individualized care. One of the most sensitive oral health issues is the impact of autoimmune disorders such as Sjögren’s Syndrome. Because this condition is linked to gingivitis, we want our patients to be aware of it and how to manage it.

The causes of Sjögren’s Syndrome are not fully understood, but the disease mostly is found in middle-aged women who have recently had an infection or otherwise been under stress. The disease causes the immune system to attack the tear ducts and saliva glands, drying out the patient’s mouth. This puts the patient at increased risk for tooth decay because saliva helps to wash away food debris and keep the pH level of the mouth inhospitable to bacteria and fungi. Infections in the gum pockets create acid, which causes gum tissue to bleed and triggers the immune system’s inflammation response.

The test for Sjögren’s Syndrome involves plucking a few saliva glands from the lower lip and sending them to a laboratory for analysis. If the patient tests positive, we can prescribe throat moisturizers and saliva production stimulants to ease their discomfort.

Tooth Extraction

If a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay, one of our doctors at Riverwalk Dental will first try to fix it with a filling, crown or other dental treatment. However, when there’s too much damage for the tooth to be repaired, the tooth may need to be removed from its socket in the bone. Here at Riverwalk Dental, we offer tooth extractions to eliminate your oral discomfort.

A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that can be seen in the mouth. In a simple extraction, the dentist will loosen the tooth with an instrument called an elevator. Then, the dentist uses forceps to remove the tooth. A surgical extraction is a more complex procedure. It is used if a tooth may have broken off at the gum line or has not come into the mouth yet, such as wisdom teeth. During a surgical extraction, the doctor will make a small incision into your gum. Sometimes it’s necessary to remove some of the bone around the tooth or to cut the tooth in half in order to extract it.

If you have questions or concerns about tooth extraction, please give us a call. Riverwalk Dental is located at 540 6th Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2G 1K5, Canada. To schedule an appointment, call 1-403-456-4994 or visit riverwalkdental.ca.

Oral Cancer Risks

Oral cancer is a malignant growth that affects any part of the oral cavity, including the lips, upper or lower jaw, tongue, gums, cheeks, and throat. Anyone can get oral cancer, but the risk is higher if you are male, over age 40, use tobacco or alcohol or have a history of head or neck cancer. Understanding the causative factors of oral cancer will contribute to the prevention of the disease. Your health is important to us and you should schedule regular dental checkups with our doctors at Riverwalk Dental to detect oral cancer early when it is the easiest to treat.

If you smoke, drink excessive amounts of alcohol or have a poor diet, changing these habits can decrease the chances of developing oral cancer. Also, if you’ve had oral cancer before, you may be more likely to develop it again, so keeping up with regular dental visits is important. If you notice mouth ulcers that do not heal, pain when swallowing, a sensation that something is stuck in the throat, or pain in the neck or ears that isn’t going away, schedule a consultation with one of our doctors at Riverwalk Dental to treat the problem.

If you have questions or concerns about oral cancer, please give us a call. Riverwalk Dental is located at 540 6th Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2G 1K5, Canada. To schedule an appointment, call 1-403-456-4994 or visit riverwalkdental.ca.

Sleep Apnea and Floppy Eyelids

When people are aware that they suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), dentists such as our team at Riverwalk Dental in Calgary can make night guards for them that will help keep their airways open. But people often do not know why they are fatigued unless there is someone who can tell them whether they snore. Now, scientists have found a new indicator of sleep apnea: floppy eyelids.

The study was small in size, but it found that 53% of people with sleep apnea also had eyelids that were rubbery or misshapen. These people’s eyelids flipped inside-out more easily, putting them at greater risk for dryness and corneal abrasions.

Scientists are unsure of why OSA is linked to floppy eyelids, although they hypothesize that inflammation is damaging the proteins that allow skin to regain its shape after stretching. For people with lax eyelids, a night guard may be a better option than a CPAP machine, since the dry air it emits can further harm their eyes. People who suspect they have sleep apnea should get assessed in a sleep center so they can determine if it is the kind a dentist can assist with.

Common Dental Instruments

We want patients to feel comfortable in our Riverwalk Dental office. The instruments used by dentists and hygienists can be pretty cool, but for some people, they are a source of anxiety. To help accustom patients to our tools, we decided to describe the ones we most often use.

The explorer, also known as a probe, is a metal hook at the end of a handle. We use it to test the depth and cleanliness of gum pockets, as well as the sturdiness of dental enamel, and to break off plaque and tartar. There are a number of slightly-differently shaped probes we use for testing and cleaning different parts of different teeth. A handheld mirror allows us to see places in a patient’s mouth that aren’t normally visible and can be used to lift the inside of the cheek away from the teeth.

If we find decay, we remove it with a drill that releases water, preventing the mouth form suffering heat damage. (Patients are always numbed, first.) When preparing white composite filling materials, we’ll mix them on a small spatula. We apply resin to the teeth using a blunt instrument called a burnisher, which we also use to contour the new filling. When whole teeth need to be removed, we use an elevator, which is a narrow spoon, to rock them back and forth at the root until they are loose enough to pull with reverse-action forceps.

Dr. Jared Palmer and his team operate Riverwalk Dental at 540 6th Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2G 1K5, Canada. To schedule an appointment, call 1-403-456-4994 or visit Riverwalk Dental.

Chewing Gum with Xylitol

Xylitol is a naturally occurring carbohydrate, that looks and tastes like regular table sugar without all of the negative side effects. At drugstores, you’ve probably seen it on the label of a pack of “sugar-free” gum. Studies using xylitol as either a sugar substitute or a small dietary addition have demonstrated a dramatic reduction in tooth decay, along with reversal of dental caries. With benefits such as these, our doctors at Riverwalk Dental encourage you to consume more of it.

Xylitol tastes sweet but, unlike sugar, it is not converted in the mouth to acids that cause tooth decay. In fact, it reduces levels of decay-causing bacteria in saliva and can help keep a neutral pH level in the mouth. No acid is formed because the pH of saliva and does not fall. After chewing gum with xylitol, the bacteria do not stick well on the surface of teeth and as a result, the amount of plaque decreases.

Oral Care for Diabetic Patients

People who have poorly controlled diabetes are at a greater risk for developing dental problems such as bad breath, bleeding, and sore gums, as well as frequent infections. A patient with diabetes is more likely to have infections of the gums and bones that hold teeth together than those who don’t have the condition. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes and are overdue for a dental checkup, please schedule a consultation at Riverwalk Dental.

Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, managing your blood sugar level is critical. The higher your blood sugar level, the higher your risk of tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontitis. In addition, high blood sugar may cause dry mouth and make gum disease worse. The decrease in saliva can cause an increase in tooth-decaying bacteria and plaque buildup. Prevent these complications by brushing at least twice a day for two minutes, flossing at least once a day, and maintaining blood sugar levels with a healthy diet.

If you have questions or concerns about dental services, please give us a call. Riverwalk Dental is located at 540 6th Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2G 1K5, Canada. To schedule an appointment, call 1-403-456-4994 or visit riverwalkdental.ca.

Replacing Fillings

When patients need to have cavities filled in, they can count on the high-quality work of Riverwalk Dental in Calgary. Properly-cared for fillings can last for a long time. But they do eventually wear out, which is why patients should know what to be on the look-out for.

Fillings are placed after decayed enamel has been drilled away. While patients may be a bit uncomfortable following the drilling, pain should not be intense or last for longer than two days. The patient should also be able to close their teeth together without resistance and there shouldn’t be saliva leaking from the filling location. If either of these things happens, it could be a sign that the filling is misshapen and needs to be redone.

Bonding has a lifespan of about ten years. After that, even a well-placed filling may come loose or start to develop cracks. Bacteria can find refuge in cracked bonding and cause another dental infection. By maintaining regular dental check-ups, patients can help us to remove and replace old fillings before they become problems. If a patient is experiencing pain or can tell a filling is loose, they should schedule an emergency appointment.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Gum Disease

There are a number of health conditions which can make it harder for patients to avoid gum disease. Among them is rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but recent studies have found that it may not be for the reasons people have long assumed.

RA is an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own synovium, which is the soft tissue that lines joints. This results in painful swelling. In a recent study by Johns Hopkins, 70% of people with RA were found to have gingivitis or periodontal disease, which is a much higher rate than in the general population.

It makes sense that people with arthritis wouldn’t be able to brush or floss as well, but gingivitis was also found in people whose RA had not yet progressed very far. Other new research indicates that gum tissue shares a lot of its genetic and protein structure with synovium. In that case, it is especially important for people with RA to integrate dental care into a regular part of their maintenance team. Home items such as water picks and electric toothbrushes can help them reduce gum inflammation.

Risks Associated with Tooth Tartar

Maintaining good oral care habits is important for keeping teeth clean, plaque-free, and tartar-free. Even if you take excellent care of your teeth, food particles mix with saliva in the mouth to form dental plaque, a soft sticky gunk that coats your teeth and gets under the gum line. If plaque isn’t eliminated on a daily basis, it will turn into tartar which only our professionals at Riverwalk Dental are able to remove.

Tartar gives plaque more room to grow and a much stickier surface to adhere, which can lead to more serious conditions such as cavities and gum disease. Not only can tartar threaten the health of your teeth and gums, it can also leave your smile looking dull and lackluster. The most common sign of tartar is a yellow or brown color to teeth and gums. Proper brushing, especially with American Dental Association (ADA) approved tartar control toothpaste, and flossing is necessary to reduce plaque and tartar buildup.

Foods to Avoid with TMJ/TMD

If you’ve been diagnosed with a TMJ disorder, our doctors at Riverwalk Dental want to assure that you are pain-free. If you have TMJ/TMD you may want to avoid certain types of foods that could make the condition worse. We don’t recommend making any drastic changes to your diet, but we do suggest incorporating softer foods into your diet. TMJ is a chronic condition that requires self-care measures and a little help from your dentist.

Crunchy foods, including popcorn, chips and other salty snack foods may be too difficult for your jaw to chew when you have TMJ. Hard vegetables like carrots and celery can also cause pain in the jaw because of the intensity with which you need to bite down on them. Other types of food to avoid include chewy snacks, fatty foods, and foods that are cut into large pieces.

If you have questions or concerns regarding TMJ/TMD, please give us a call. Riverwalk Dental is located at 540 6th Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2G 1K5, Canada. To schedule an appointment, call 1-403-456-4994 or visit riverwalkdental.ca.

Causes of Gap Teeth

A gap (also known as a diastema) between the top front incisors is one of the most common cosmetic problems people want dentists’ help with. At Riverwalk Dental in Calgary, we’re happy to help patients with their smiles, but depending on a gap’s cause, different treatments may be appropriate.

If the teeth are otherwise in good alignment and there’s just a small gap, veneers may be the quickest solution. They are artificial fronts for teeth that can be made in a slightly different size than the underlying tooth, closing the space. It is more common for teeth to be somewhat misaligned, in which case the Invisalign orthodontic treatment we offer may be preferable. Invisalign cannot be used for major realignment, but it is a good option for people seeking cosmetic changes.

Gaps that are caused by serious jaw issues, such as an overbite, may require a more specialized approach. Even if orthodontic work is completed successfully, there may be an underlying cause that has to be dealt with. Some people have overbites because anxiety causes them to suck their thumbs. Others involuntarily thrust their tongues forward when they swallow, in which case they will need to see an ear, nose, and throat doctor. It is also possible that the strip of connective tissue between the upper lip and the jaw, the labial frenum, is too thick, in which case an oral surgeon will have to cut some of it away.

White Spot Lesions

Patients may be confused by the appearance of white spots on their teeth. Do they mean something good or bad about the state of their mouths? At Riverwalk Dental in Calgary, we want patients to understand when their oral health is in danger, so this week’s blog post is about incipient lesions, also known as white spot lesions.

White spots are the earliest signs of tooth decay. When enamel, the hard substance that makes up the outside of teeth, is eroded, it looks white and chalky. Dentists know that if a person has glazed-looking upper back teeth, it is a sign that they are suffering from chronic acid reflux. Elsewhere in the mouth, acid exposure is probably being caused by bacterial infections. As bacteria eat, they produce acid, which gets stuck in plaque. Damage to enamel is the result.

A white spot can form in as few as thirty days, and if they’re not taken care of, they will lead to more decay. Better brushing can remove a developing infection. Some places to pay especially close attention to are the gum line, the sides of teeth, and the area surrounding orthodontic brackets. Once decay is stopped, the teeth may remineralize naturally or can be treated with veneers.

Oral Care for Elder Patients

Good dental hygiene and oral care habits are important at any age. But as we all grow older, certain health concerns earn our full attention, especially the importance of oral health for senior patients. Whether you have all of your original teeth, some of them, or a full set of dentures, our staff at Riverwalk Dental can help you keep your mouth healthy.

If you’re a senior headed for a checkup, one of our doctors will conduct a thorough history and dental exam. During the oral exam, he or she will check the following: your face and neck, your bite, your jaw, your lymph nodes and salivary glands, your inner cheeks as well as the inside of your oral cavity. It is important for us to check for signs of infection and oral cancer so that if something is wrong, we can catch it at the earliest stage when it is the easiest to treat. If you wear dentures or other appliances, we will also ask about when you wear them as well as if you are experiencing any problem areas in the mouth.

Losing the First Tooth

If your kid is turning into a big kid, losing the first baby tooth is on the horizon.  It’s an exciting sign of growing up, but many kids still feel anxious or uncomfortable dealing with the unfamiliar sensation of a loose tooth.  Riverwalk Dental wants kids and parents to be prepared and understand why this pain occurs so your child can still have a positive tooth loss experience.

Before a baby tooth is lost, it begins to break free of its nerve endings.  This is the natural process that makes the tooth feel loose and wobbly at the gums, and the area will become swollen and red.  It can be painful, and for kids a great way to soothe tooth pain is applying a cold compress to the outside of the mouth in the affected area.  Children may complain that they find it hard to bite or chew with loose or missing teeth.  It’s still important to keep eating healthy while they grow new teeth so encourage soup, pureed fruits, and cooked vegetables.  A few tales of the tooth fairy can usually ease a little pain, too!

Sleep Apnea and the Heart

Sleep apnea is not only a serious medical condition, but left untreated it can lead to a plethora of other health issues and is dangerous for the heart.  A patient with sleep apnea does not breathe properly during sleep, resulting in low oxygen levels throughout the entire body. Breathing supplies lungs with oxygen but also the rest of the body.  When there is a lack of oxygen, the part of the heart responsible for moving oxygenated blood to the organs and extremities is forced to work extra hard.  This can cause an enlarged heart and eventually heart failure.

Those living with untreated sleep apnea are at a higher risk of developing irregular heartbeats, and also have a higher risk for a stroke and heart attack.  Men with untreated sleep apnea are actually living with double the risk for a stroke.  If you have yet to find a solution for sleep apnea, please visit Riverwalk Dental for a consultation.

Dangers of Dental Plaque

If you run your tongue over your teeth right now and feel a sticky substance, this biofilm is called dental plaque. Plaque doesn’t bring positivity to the mouth, instead, it brings consequences. If you allow plaque to build-up on the teeth and neglect to floss it away on a daily basis, this can activate the immune system chronically, which leads to unnecessary inflammation in the body. To prevent plaque from turning into periodontal disease, visit our doctors at Riverwalk Dental.

Plaque is constantly forming on the teeth, especially after we eat or drink foods with sugars and starches. Plaque is so sticky that it keeps the acids in contact with the teeth, allowing these acids time to attack tooth enamel. If plaque isn’t brushed and flossed away, it will cause inflammation around the gums, which will cause them to bleed and become sensitive. The best thing you can do to prevent plaque from harming the teeth and gums is to brush for two minutes twice a day and floss at least once a day while maintaining yearly dental appointments.

Smoking and Oral Health

Our doctors at Riverwalk Dental understand that telling yourself to quit smoking is easier said than done. We don’t need to tell you that smoking is bad for your teeth, but we’d like to explain the reasons why. Smoking affects periodontal health because the action causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream which means that inflamed and infected gums won’t heal. Smoking also causes teeth to appear lackluster, and bad breath may become chronic.

According to the American Dental Association, smoking and tobacco use cause stained teeth, bad breath, and even a diminished sense of taste. Smoking can also hinder the immune system from fighting off infection, and a weakened immune system will also affect your oral health. The use of tobacco also increases a patient’s risk of developing oral cancer. Smokers are six times more likely than nonsmokers to develop these cancers.

Sectioning Teeth

At Riverwalk Dental, patients can count on us for quick, safe tooth extractions with minimal discomfort. Recently, we mentioned that one of the reasons the wisdom teeth are often removed is because they don’t have enough room to erupt. In those cases, they wouldn’t have enough room to be pulled or levered directly out, either, which is why we section them.

Typically, teeth are removed by rocking them gently while pushing them upward (if in the lower jaw) or pulling them (if in the upper jaw). Even if a wisdom tooth is not trapped below the gum line, this approach may not work because the wisdom teeth are anchored in the mouth by strong ligaments. Attempting to yank them all at once would require a lot of force and could hurt the patient. As an alternative, dentists use a drill to cut the teeth into smaller sections. The patient is kept numb during this and a stream of water prevents the drill from overheating. The smaller tooth sections do not require as much force to remove or as much room to be maneuvered through.

Root Canals and Orthodontics

There are times, such as following a traumatic event, when patients may need to have their teeth realigned and repaired. In these situations, either a root canal or tooth extraction and replacement would eliminate a potential infection, but it is generally preferable to do a root canal.

The way implants work is the titanium implant post fuses with the surrounding jaw bone tissue over a period of several months. This is often a good thing. When tooth roots are lost, the bone tissue recedes, but implant placement stimulates new growth, stabilizing the facial structure. However, it also means that implants are immobile. If an implant does move, dentists judge it a failure and remove it to prevent infection. Orthodontic therapy works by guiding the teeth through the jaw bone tissue, which dissolves and rebuilds around the teeth. Natural teeth can be moved through methods such as Invisalign, but implants cannot. A root canal has the advantage of preserving the outside of the natural tooth structure. It can only be carried out when a tooth is not cracked at the root, but the artificial crown placed after a root canal is complete is no impediment to orthodontic work.

Different Reasons a Tooth May Be Extracted

At Riverwalk Dental, we will do everything we can to avoid pulling a tooth, but it can’t always be avoided. Sometimes tooth extraction is necessary when there is more damage that can be repaired, or if a tooth is badly infected and extraction is the only solution. Wisdom teeth are the most common extraction procedure here at our practice, but other reasons for tooth extraction may include the following.

  • Severe tooth damage/trauma – some teeth have such extensive decay and damage (broken or cracked) that repair is not possible.

  • Orthodontic treatment – people getting braces may need teeth extracted to create room for teeth that are being moved into place.

  • Some teeth may need to be extracted if they have the potential of becoming infected.

  • Extra teeth – extra teeth may block other teeth from erupting, therefore will require extraction.

Why do We Floss?

Many people hate flossing and will use every excuse in the book to avoid it. If you avoid flossing, you are only doing yourself a disservice as flossing has countless benefits. When you don’t floss, you increase your risk of developing periodontal disease and cavities. In addition, your mouth won’t feel as clean as it should. If you are looking for a reason to floss, our doctors at Riverwalk Dental are here to give you several.

By flossing thoroughly at least once a day, you may notice a little less pink in the sink. This is because flossing removes food particles from in between the teeth that cause gingivitis. Flossing keeps the gums and teeth strong and eliminates dental plaque that contributes to tooth decay. Flossing will help you prevent cavities and by maintaining your gum health, you will improve your overall health.

Pain with Braces

The doctors of Riverwalk Dental have seen many smiles transformed with braces.  But we all know braces are a long process, and there is some pain and discomfort along the way.  Patients with braces often feel a little discomfort after their wires have been tightened, and patients with new braces usually experience some uncomfortable chafing as their mouth gets used to braces.  These are both normal occurrences and you can ease the pain while getting to your perfect smile!

With a new set of braces, the insides of cheeks and lips will rub against the brackets and wires.  The soft tissue will toughen as your mouth gets accustomed to the braces, but at first it can create sore spots.  Dental wax is a great defense against this.  Just a small piece can cover the edge of a bracket and relieve any chafing.  After a set of braces is tightened a patient will also feel some pain and soreness.  The patient should eat soft foods right after a tightening if they are experiencing discomfort.  If the pain continues, over-the-counter pain relievers like Advil and Motrin are helpful.  Please still contact the office if you experience any extreme or long-lasting discomfort.

Caring for Invisalign

Riverwalk Dental provides Invisalign’s clear aligner system, which straightens teeth without the metallic look of braces. Another perk of Invisalign clear aligners is that they require less maintenance and won’t prevent you from eating certain foods.  Although you won’t have to make too many changes, there are still guidelines you should follow to wear and care for your aligners!

You should remove Invisalign each time you eat, but if you do eat anything while wearing the aligners make sure to clean them thoroughly afterwards. It is also best to brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligners back in.  Ideally when wearing clear aligners, you would only drink water. Colorful drinks can stain the aligners and too many hot drinks can eventually warp the plastic.  If you do drink anything other than water while wearing the aligners you should rinse them with warm water afterwards.

Cleaning the clear aligners regularly is important for your teeth and straightening treatment.  Clear aligners can become discolored over time without losing their effectiveness, but the color can show on your own teeth and continue to darken.  Invisalign offers its own brand of cleaning solution, and there are several soaking solutions available over the counter, but brushing the aligners is also a sufficient cleaning option.  Do not use toothpaste to brush the aligners because subtle abrasive properties of toothpaste could harm the aligner.  It is best to use a mild dish soap and a soft bristle brush to clean the aligners each time you brush your teeth.

To learn more about Invisalign and all the services we provide, visit www.riverwalkdental.ca for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Riverwalk Dental located at Canada, Alberta, T1B 4Y2, Medicine Hat, 101-7 Strachan Bay, SE, call 403-456-4994.

Dental Abscess

Most of us know how painful a mouth sore can be, which is why our doctors at Riverwalk Dental hope you never come in contact with a dental abscess. A dental abscess is a pocket of pus that forms around the root of a tooth and can result from an untreated cavity, a dental injury, or old dental work. Unfortunately if one develops, it won’t go away on its own, and our doctors will have to suggest a procedure to save the tooth.

If a tooth is infected and you don’t seek treatment, you risk developing a dental abscess. The tooth is hard on the outside, but inside, where the nerves, connective tissue, and pulp lie, once the pulp becomes dead, it can lead to an abscess. Sometimes an abscess will cause a pimple-like bump on the gum that may be accompanied by pain, swelling, and pain when you chew, and/or gum tenderness. To treat the problem, our doctors may suggest antibiotics or tooth extraction.

If you have questions or concerns about oral care or dental health, please give us a call. Riverwalk Dental is located at 540 6th Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2G 1K5, Canada. To schedule an appointment, call 1-403-456-4994 or visit rverwalkdental.ca.

Toothbrush Abrasion

Too much of anything can be bad for you and the same goes for brushing your teeth.  If you notice that your gums are sensitive to touch, but your oral care routine is up to par, you may be brushing your teeth too hard. Vigorous brushing can wear down tooth enamel and cause damage to the gums, exposing the sensitive root area. Our doctors at Riverwalk Dental are here to encourage you to take your time while brushing and do the job at a slower pace.

Those at risk for toothbrush abrasion are the ones who diligently brush their teeth. We understand that you may be wondering why you are getting punished for good behavior, but there is a solution to the problem. Changing your brushing habits will benefit your teeth and gums. It helps to use a soft-bristled toothbrush to prevent damage and reduce sensitivity. You should apply just enough pressure to feel the bristles against the gums, but do not squish the bristles into your gums, as this means you’re brushing too hard.

Diagnosing a Cracked Tooth

Cracked teeth are a highly variable problem, which is why at Riverwalk Dental, we want our patients to have an understanding of what will happen if one is found. Depending on the crack’s location and severity, the problem could range from merely cosmetic to necessitating extraction.

The smallest cracks, called craze lines, do not threaten the tooth’s structure and can simply be covered up. More serious cracks will often be present long before they cause pain and may only be discovered through a dental examination or when an old filling is removed. Because cracks are usually too small to be examined through x-rays, dentists often test them through other means such as probing and asking patients to report what they feel when they bite down on cotton. In cases where a cracked root is suspected, a dentist may need to cut a flap in the gum tissue in order to do a visual examination. If the root is not cracked, the problem may be fixable with a new crown. If it is, there are ways of replacing the tip of a root, but a crack the entire length of the tooth will require the tooth to be replaced. It is also necessary to determine whether the tooth has been infected, which is something x-rays are more useful for.

Use of Fluoridated Toothpaste

We highly value preventive care at Riverwalk Dental in Calgary, particularly for our pediatric patients. Fluoridated toothpaste can be a powerful tool for preventing tooth decay, but there are some rules about how to use it properly which people should be aware of.

Fluoride has dramatically improved the general public’s dental health. Dental problems are not nearly as severe in areas with fluoridated water and the topical fluoride treatments given to children reduce how badly their teeth are damaged by the acid secreted by bacteria. This is important because pain from tooth decay causes children to lose sleep and avoid eating. Often, their behavior and academic performance suffer as a result.

Brushing their teeth is one of the first things children learn about self-care. It should be done for two minutes at a time. Only soft-bristled toothbrushes should be used, and fluoridated toothpaste should not be used on mouthguards or other oral appliances. People should brush on every tooth surface and on their tongue. Fluoridated toothpaste should not be swallowed or the teeth may become discolored. Gums should not bleed during regular toothbrushing; if they do, something is wrong.

Tooth Sensitivity

Sensitive teeth need no introduction. Sensitive teeth bring inflamed gums, gums that are tender to touch, and gums that are dark purple in color. When teeth become sensitive, it is likely due to periodontal disease causing the gums to recede, which can result in nerve irritation. Our doctors at Riverwalk Dental can treat tooth sensitivity in the office and help you maintain a healthy mouth at home.

When the root of a tooth is exposed due to periodontal disease, the layer of protection is eliminated. Abrasive brushing can make tooth sensitivity worse and may expose dentin, which will make eating acidic foods and beverages almost impossible. If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, invest in desensitizing toothpaste until your dental appointment. Once you visit us for a professional cleaning, we can guide you on the road to a healthier smile.

Replace Your Toothbrush

Our doctors at Riverwalk Dental are here to remind you when to replace your toothbrush. We’ll make it easy, even if you don’t have the best memory. If you’ve recently fallen ill and continued to brush your teeth, it’s best to toss out this germy toothbrush and replace it will one that is sterilized. Replacing your toothbrush will make your teeth a little cleaner and your breath a little fresher.

To keep your mouth healthy, most dentists recommend swapping toothbrushes every three months. This is the time it takes for bristles to become frayed and worn out, but if this happens sooner, you should replace the brush once the bristles show wear and tear. To prevent cross-contamination from cold and flu viruses, store the toothbrush upright in a cup, and let it air dry.

Oral Cancer linked to Alcohol

Oral cancer screenings are one of the many services we provide our patients at Riverwalk Dental in Calgary. A dentist is often the first health professional to detect a case of oral cancer and remains important throughout the care process. As part of our goal of combatting this disease, we wanted to share the findings of a study by the American Society of Clinical Oncology that found a relationship between oral cancer and alcohol use.

The new study found that about 5% of new cancer cases globally are due to alcohol. This statistic included oral and throat cancers. While it has long been known that smoking and alcohol combined presented an oral cancer risk, the new study examined alcohol in isolation. The exact cause-and-effect remains unclear, but scientists suppose that alcohol may break down oral tissues and there is a chance for a DNA copy error to occur every time they regrow.

The study found that the type of alcohol consumed appeared to be irrelevant and that, while heavy drinking presented the greatest risk, moderate and light drinking could also lead to cancer. However, it also found that the risk of cancer in the mouth and the rest of the aerodigestive tract declined if the subject stopped drinking.

Filling a Cavity

Our doctors at Riverwalk Dental never want patients to experience a cavity. This is because a cavity is a hole in the tooth that is caused by decay. Cavities can develop for a variety of different factors such as poor oral care habits and a poor diet. If you fall victim to a cavity, our doctors have a variety of filling materials to repair the tooth, but we’d much rather you improve your oral care habits, as well as your diet, to prevent a cavity from forming.

Fillings can be made from many types of material, but the most common filling is composite resin. Composite fillings are designed to match the shade of the tooth and will give the restored tooth a natural appearance. To fill a cavity, the doctor will numb the area to reduce pain and help you relax. Once you decide which type of material is best for you, the doctor will then remove the decay and replace it with filling material. Your oral cavity may remain numb for a few hours after the procedure, but the result is a restored, healthy tooth that is cavity-free.

If you have questions or concerns about dental fillings, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.riverwalkdental.ca for more information. What is the ADA Seal?

When you purchase products that bare the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval, this means that you’ve made a good choice when choosing your oral care instruments. When you see the ADA seal of acceptance, this means that you have found an oral care product that has been scientifically evaluated to be safe and effective. At Riverwalk Dental, we encourage patients to use oral care products that advertise that they are from the American Dental Association to guarantee optimal oral health.

Not every dental product possesses the ADA seal of approval, but this doesn’t mean that it won’t get the job done. When a product has the ADA seal of approval, this just means that the company selling the product may or may not have submitted their product for review. Each year, the American Dental Association receives inquiries about potential and existing ADA Seal products. To put it simply, it is the goal of the ADA to keep oral care a patients top priority and to help them maintain good oral health and prevent dental diseases.

Lip Care in Winter

Following some bitingly cold weather, we at Riverwalk Dental in Calgary want to ensure our patients understand proper lip and dry mouth care during winter. The low moisture in cold air makes lips vulnerable to chapping and damage to soft tissues in the mouth can have consequences for the teeth, as well.

It’s tempting this time of year to take long, hot showers, but this will cause skin to dry out faster. Evaporating water or saliva takes more moisture with it. Therefore, it is also a bad idea to use saliva to keep the lips wet. Even worse is tucking them inside the teeth: this will irritate them and, if done too often, could push the teeth out of alignment. A much better idea is to use lip balm, with the caveat that fragrances and menthol cause irritation to some people. If swelling or redness occurs, a change in products is necessary.

Dry mouth is also worse in the winter. The absence of saliva makes the mouth more vulnerable to infections such as dental caries. Humidifiers in the bedroom can provide significant relief, as can the use of throat moisturizers.

Keeping Up With Regular Dental Cleanings

The doctors at Riverwalk Dental encourage patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for biannual professional cleanings.  Even when you regularly brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional. At a cleaning, our hygienists use professional tools to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria build-up from your teeth that is too tough to remove on your own.

The Academy of General Dentistry recommends you have a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months.  It’s important to see a professional regularly to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.  During a teeth cleaning, our hygienists thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the hygienist flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist.  If you need your teeth cleaned, don’t wait any longer!
